The government today said it has revised regulatory norms for building construction activities to enable single-window clearance for new projects.

It further said that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has finalised the revision of National Building Code of India (NBC) and the revised version is currently under publication.

"The existing NBC 2005 contains the provision of single-window clearance system for approval of development and building projects. This provision has been further revised and detailed in the revision of NBC," Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs C R Chaudhary said in a written to the Lok Sabha.

"Such provision of NBC when adopted by the state/local authorities through their building bye-laws would help in achieving the objective of single-window clearance leading to expeditious approval process," he said.

NBC is a comprehensive building Code that provides guidelines for regulating the building construction activities across the country.

The Code mainly contains administrative regulations, development control rules and general building requirements, fire safety requirements, stipulations regarding materials, structural design and construction (including safety), and building and plumbing services.

The Code was first published in 1970 at the instance of then Planning Commission and then revised in 1983. Thereafter three major amendments were issued, two in 1987 and the third in 1997.
