The government has sought nomination of a serving or retired government official having knowledge of law, vigilance and investigations for appointment as vigilance commissioner in Central Vigilance Commission.

The tenure of one of the vigilance commissioners, R Sri Kumar, of the country's top anti-corruption body is coming to an end in January next year.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has written to all secretaries of central government departments to recommend names of suitable candidates who could be considered for the post.

A person must have held or holding the post of secretary to the government of India, the position of chairman, managing director or chief executive officer of a public sector undertaking or should have expertise and experience in finance including insurance and banking, law, vigilance and investigations, said the letter by DoPT Secretary S K Sarkar.

"The person should be of outstanding merit and impeccable integrity," he said as citing one of the eligibility criteria.

The names of only those persons will be considered for selection who will get at least three years tenure as central vigilance commissioner or vigilance commissioner, the letter said.

An incumbent remains in office until attaining the age of 65 years or upon the completion of four years, whichever is earlier. The last date for sending nominations is November 15.

The five short listed names, by the Minister of State for Personnel V Narayanasamy, will be put before a three-member selection committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for selection.

The appointment, on the basis of recommendation of the committee, is finally made by the President.

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj are other members of the selection panel.

Sri Kumar, a former IPS officer, was appointed as vigilance commissioner in the CVC on September 8, 2010.

Besides him, J M Garg is another vigilance commissioner in the anti-corruption watchdog headed by Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar.
