Govt to mark bicentenary of Tatya Tope next week

Government will commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Tatya Tope as part of which it is organising a special lecture and a conference in the national capital next week.

The event -- 'Tatya Tope and the First War of Independence'-- hosted by the Culture Ministry will be held at Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) on February 16, according to the library's website.

The day-long event, which will start at 10 am, will see participation of eminent educationists and research scholars.

Ramachandra Pandurang Tope, better known as Tatya Tope, was born in 1814 and was a prominent leader of the 1857 mutiny.
 

The government also observed the 150th birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai and released a commemorative coin of Rs 150 and a circulation coin of Rs 10 on the freedom fighter last month.

The government also plans to observe the 475th birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap at the national level this year.

Earlier, Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma had said the government will observe the commemorations of birth centenaries and 125th and 150th anniversaries of personalities of national importance.
