Gowda felicitates CWG-2014 medal winner railway sportspersons

Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda today rewarded Rs 25 lakh, Rs 20 lakh and Rs 15 lakh each to railway sportspersons who won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals respectively at the recently concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games-2014.

The minister gave the cash reward to nine railway sportspersons at a ceremony here.

India won a total of 64 medals in the 20th Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow in Scotland from July 21 to August 3 this year. Out of the total 64 medals, Railway sportsperson won nine.

The performance of Railway weightlifters and wrestlers in particular had been remarkable, who won two Gold, four Silver and three Bronze medals.
 

"It made the heart of each railway man swell with pride to see the athletes of Indian Railways win laurels for the country and kept the nation's flag flying high in the recently concluded CWG held at Glasgow," Gowda said while felicitating the sportspersons.

He said with the recruitment of around 500 sportspersons each year, railways strives to identify and promote the best sporting talent in the country.

Congratulating the sportspersons for their performance in CWG, the Minister assured that Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) would continue to provide all support so that they can concentrate and strive to deliver their excellence on the field.

He expressed hope that a sizable contingent from railways sportsperson would represent India in the forthcoming Asian Games in South Korea to be held in next month and make the nation proud.
