Graft case: Three postal officials, another get three-year RI

Mahadeb Pathak, Maheswar Nath, both then Postal Assistants (Deposit), Rajendra Maharaj working in General Post Office, Guwahati and NSC agent Barja Kanta Kalita were handed three years of rigorous imprisonment by the special CBI judge in the case.

"The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on Pathak and Nath," a CBI spokesperson said here.

The spokesperson said the case was registered in 1998 under charges of alleged criminal conspiracy to cheat and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act on the allegations of criminal conspiracy in opening of 48 Saving Bank accounts in fictitious name with the GPO.

 

"Besides allegations of depositing cheque, dividend of UTI and other financial institutions amounting to Rs 6.91 lakh in the said fictitious accounts and subsequent withdrawal of the same were also levelled," the spokesperson said.

"On completion of investigation, a charge sheet was filed on 23-08-2012 in the court of Special Judge, CBI, Guwahati against Pathak, Nath, working in General Post Office Guwahati, Barja Kanta Kalita, NSC Agent of Kamrup, Assam (Private Person) and Rajendra Maharaj, PLW, Guwahati GPO. The court found the accused persons guilty and convicted them," the spokesperson said.
