Police today arrested an elected Gram Panchayat member belonging to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) for his alleged links with Maoists from Jhargram police district of West Bengal.

Sukumar Murmu, the Gram Panchayat member, was arrested following a tip-off and a landmine device recovered from his house at Basantapur village, Jhargram superintendent of police Bharati Ghosh said.

This was part of a series of operations launched at various Maoist affected areas of Lalgarh and Jhargram where a bomb concealed in a tiffin box was defused earlier in the day, the SP said.

Murmu was being questioned by the police on his alleged links with the Maoists, Ghosh said.

Meanwhile, in a separate operation, the CRPF's 184 battalion recovered two guns and seven cartridges from nearby Birhani and Simli forest areas.
