A liver harvested from an organ donor in Chandigarh was successfully transplanted to a 21- year-old patient at AIIMS here after a green corridor was created in the national capital today, traversing through some its busiest streets.
The organ, harvested from a deceased 55-year-old man at PGI, Chandigarh, was ferried to Delhi to be transplanted to the recipient at AIIMS on a private airliner which left Chandigarh at 9.45 am and arrived at the IGI Airport here close to 11 am, sources in AIIMS said.
"The vehicle carrying the liver departed for AIIMS at 11.17 AM and covered a distance of 18.5 kms through the middle of the thickest traffic of Rao Tula Ram Marg and Ring Road in just 23.10 minutes," according to DCP, Traffic (Southern Range) Vijay Singh.
A senior official of Delhi Traffic Police said, the stretches the vehicle passed through not only have a high volume of traffic, but are also used for movement of VVIPs to and from IGI Airport throughout the day.
"But keeping in view the critical nature of the assignment, we swiftly swung into action and alerted all the personnel en route from IGI Airport to AIIMS to facilitate the job," he said.
