A live grenade was today found in the SUV of a Congress supporter here, police said.

The grenade was attached to the spare tyre of Michael Pakyntein's SUV, which was parked outside his residence, City SP Spill Thamar told journalists.

The incident was reported around 11:30 am today and a bomb squad that rushed to the spot confirmed it was a live Chinese grenade.

It was defused soon after, Thamar said.

"A thorough investigation will be conducted to nab the culprits and police will also try to find out if it was fallout of a political rivalry in the area," he said.

Pakyntein, a former confidante and supporter of United Democratic Party legislator Paul Lyngdoh in Shillong West constituency, is rooting for Congress nominee M Rapsang in the assembly polls.

Meghalaya is set to go to polls on February 27 and the results will be announced on March 3.
