The groom's parents reportedly forced the 17-year-old girl's mother, whose husband had died a few years ago and their relatives for the marriage, they said.

The marriage was conducted at the Mariyamman temple at Indur today.

When police rushed to the spot following a complaint from the village administrative officer S Selvaraj, they found the 21-year-old bridegroom had fled the spot after tying the nuptial knot.

Cases were registered under provisions of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act 2006 and the groom's parents were arrested, police said.

Later, the girl was handed over to her mother, they added.
