Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has been asked to manufacture two bailey bridges for movement of traffic at the collapsed Majerhat bridge site, a top company official said on Wednesday.
"We have been given the green signal yesterday (Tuesday). We can install the bridges within 10 to 12 days as and when asked to," said Rear Admiral (retd) V K Saxena, Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE.
The West Bengal government has planned to set up a level crossing at Majerhat and put in place two bailey bridges over a canal for traffic movement in both directions.
Each of the 4.5-metre wide and 80-feet long bridges will be able to carry a load of 87.5 tonne at a time, Saxena said.
"Following the incident, we had offered our services to the state government," he said.
A portion of the Majerhat bridge collapsed on September 4, killing three people and jeopardising vehicular movement from large parts of southwest Kolkata and South 24 Parganas district to the heart of the city.
With the arterial Diamond Harbour Road closed at Majerhat, vehicles are having to take long detours and face acute traffic jams.
