The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has inspected all the jetties here which have iron ore piled up on them fearing that the ore might run into water bodies on whose banks they are situated.

GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said the inspection of all the 12 jetties across the state was carried out by a team of experts, who have filed a positive report about the situation there.

Noronha said the board is "satisfied with the precautions taken by the jetty operators."

"We are satisfied with the precaution taken by the jetty operators. All of them have constructed garland drains around the pile of ore and at the end of it there is a settling pond which stops water from running into the river," he said.

The government figures reveal that all jetties together are storing whopping 13 million metric tones of ore which was on its way for the exports, before Supreme Court stopped the mining activity in September 2012.

Noronha said the stacks are covered by silpaulin, and there are filters to ensure that the ore does not run off in the river.
