Gorkhaland Territorial Administration chief executive Benoy Tamang, arrested on charges of arson and blocking highway, was today granted bail by a local court here.

District Sessions judge Biplab Roy granted him bail this afternoon after he was produced from Jalpaiguri jail.

Public Prosecutor Pankaj Prasad said that Tamang got the bail for want of enough evidence against him in the case of arson and blocking highway.

Currently lodged in the custody of Darjeeling jail, Tamang will be released tomorrow after legal documents reach the jail authorities.

Tamang, a member of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's central committee, was arrested at Rangpo on Bengal-Sikkim border on August 22 for arson at a government bungalow at Chakdah and for blocking highway during the GJM movement besides other cases registered against him in 2007.

The GJM unanimously elected Benoy Tamang as the chief executive of GTA on September 27.
