Police today arrested five persons at Dabhel village in Navsari district of Gujarat, taking the number of those arrested in connection with yesterday's attack on the police team to 12.

"Navsari police have arrested five persons who were involved in stone-pelting and attack on police in Dabhel village on the charges of rioting," District Superintendent of Police Nilesh Jajadia said.

The situation was under control but the police were conducting a combing operation in the village and elsewhere in the district today to prevent further untoward incidents, Jajadia told PTI.

Two policemen were injured in stone-pelting in the village yesterday while three people were injured when police opened fire.

The violence started when the police arrived in the village to probe reports of illegal slaughter of cows. According to the police, some men belonging to a minority community attacked the police team.

Police lobbed tear-gas shells and later fired in the air to disperse the violent mob. Twelve men were subsequently arrested.

Similar incidents of violence were witnessed in Vadodara and Ahmedabad cities in the last fortnight.
