The monsoon session of Gujarat Assembly will be held for three days from August 26.
"The three-day monsoon session of Gujarat Assembly will take place between August 26 and 28," Assembly Secretary D M Patel said here today.
The previous session on budget was held in February and lasted for over a month, he added.
The opposition Congress was quick to demand that the Assembly session should be held for at least five days.
"The session should be held for at least five days to represent various issues affecting people of Gujarat," Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly, Shankersinh Vaghela, told reporters in Gandhinagar.
Of the three days, one full day will be spent for condoling the death of our former President A P J Abdul Kalam and other state leaders, who passed away recently, he said, adding, "Only the last day of the session will begin from the morning. Hence, there is technically only one day in hand for discussion, which is too brief."
"The session must be held for at least five days. If the state government does not have any issues to discuss, then we will provide them. The BJP government should not run away from debate in Assembly. I feel very sad because issues affecting people are not given due time and weightage in the House," he added.
Earlier, too, we had made several representations to the government to increase the days of session, he said.
"Nevertheless, there has been absolutely no change the way this government functions. Thus, there is no point in representing this issue again. I urge the government to give a thought to this issue," the Congress leader said.
Vaghela also expressed solidarity with the Patel community in the wake of recent protests by its members seeking reservation under OBC quota.
"The Government should hold talks with the Patel community to find out why they are protesting. However, instead of doing that, the government fired teargas shells on them and lathi-charged them. This is a sad situation," he said.
