Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel announced here today that the state government would provide health cover up to Rs 2 lakh for construction workers and their family members.

She made the announcement after inaugurating a seminar on skill development organised by the State Labour and Employment Department and the Gujarat Plumbers' Association here.

In her speech, Patel said Gujarat is in the forefront to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mantra of 'Shrameva Jayate' by initiating various schemes for workers in the unorganised sector, such as higher education to their children as well as providing pension to workers.

The Gujarat Chief Minister admired the contribution of labourers in developing the state and added that due to cohesive relations between industry and workers, Gujarat has witnessed industrial peace.

Giving more details about the workers' pension scheme, state Labour and Employment Minister Vijay Rupani said the state government has alloted Rs 50 crore in this year's budget for the proposed pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector.

Rupani also claimed that minimum wages paid in Gujarat are "highest in the country".
