Gujarat Congress today claimed that around 500 BJP workers from Lambha ward here have joined the party.

However, BJP said these workers were never its members.

Local Congress leader and opposition leader in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Badruddin Shaikh said in a release that BJP workers who crossed over were from Lambha ward, which comes under the Maninagar Assembly seat.

More that 80 housing societies in the ward, on the outskirts of the city, did not have basic amenities such as roads, water and sewerage connection, and local BJP leaders' petitions to BJP-ruled municipal corporation did not improve the situation, he said.

"Therefore some 500 BJP leaders and workers of Lambha joined Congress today in the presence of former Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Siddharth Patel," he said.

However, BJP rubbished the claim. "This is nothing but a stunt by Congress. None of our workers or leaders have joined Congress today. Those whom Congress projects as BJP workers and leaders are not even our primary members," said media convener of Gujarat BJP Harshad Patel.
