"We have a vision of providing 140 litres per capita per day of drinking water in all 159 towns of Gujarat, for which we are trying to put a system in place," Chairman, Gujarat Urban Development Corporation, S J Haider said.
"We have already executed 123 water supply projects, out of 159 towns. In the remaining 36, we are planning to finish by end of current financial year," Haider said.
"Now we are relying more on surface water instead of ground water. In 125 places we rely on Narmada water, in another 20 places we rely on other canal systems, and only at 4-5 places we are dependent on underground water."
The state government had taken up water recycling projects in 50 cities, he added.
Under the flagship Swarn Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shehri Vikas Yojana (CM's Urban Development Scheme), there is an outlay of Rs 18,000 crore for over next five years for water projects, he said.
