Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today appointed chairpersons to 17 different state-run boards and corporations, including the newly formed commission (Aayog) as well as a corporation to look after the non-reserved communities.

These appointments were announced at a time when the Election Commission is expected to announce the poll schedule for the Assembly election for Gujarat in coming days.

Most striking appointment was of former Congress MLA Balwantsinh Rajput, who has been made the chairman of the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

Rajput had joined BJP right before the Rajya Sabha polls in August and unsuccessfully contested against Congress heavyweight Ahmed Patel.

While Hansraj Gajera has been made the chairman of the newly formed Gujarat State Non-reserved Classes Commission (Aayog), B H Ghodasara has been appointed as the chairman of the Gujarat State Non-reserved Classes Development Corporation, said an official release here.

Earlier, this month, state government gave its approval for the formation of a commission (Aayog) as well as a corporation to look after various needs of the non-reserved castes.

Other bodies where new heads were appointed include Gujarat Civil Supply Corporation, Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation, Gujarat Housing Board, Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries Board and Gujarat Warehousing Corporation among others.
