A man died in a stampede at the Ranchhodraiji temple at Dakor in Kheda district of Gujarat today during the 'Annakut' event.

During this annual ritual, people rush in to 'loot' grains and other items kept inside the temple.

Akshay Parmar (21), a participant, died, apparently due to suffocation, in the melee today, police said.

"The body has been sent for autopsy, and only after going through the autopsy report we will be able to ascertain the cause of death," said Kheda superintendent of police Maninder Pawar.

During the ritual, held on the Gujarati new year day which falls a day after Diwali, participants take off their shirts and wait for the gates of the temple to open when they rush in and loot various items kept inside.

Pawar said an inquiry into the incident has begun.

An elderly temple priest also died of heart attack today, but the SP said his death was not linked to the ritual.
