The Maharashtra Government is devising a plan to promote tourism in border areas of the state that are close to the Statue of Unity in neighbouring Gujarat, state Tourism Minister Jaykumar Rawal said Tuesday.

The Statue of Unity, a 182-metre high memorial to Sardar Patel, is the tallest statue in the world and is located on an islet in Kevadiya in Gujarat's Narmada district.

He said the Statue of Unity had brought the region on the world map and more than two lakh people had visited the site since it was opened to public on November 1.

He said it could help develop tourism in tribal villages in Maharashtra and better their economic condition.

The minister said it would provide employment opportunities to the youth in Nandurbar and the Satpura region that lies in both states.
