A 42-year-old woman, who was allegedly set on fire by relatives of her husband on suspicion of being a 'witch' in Gujarat's Arvalli district, today died of burn injuries at the civil hospital here, police said.

The woman was allegedly set afire by two nephews of her husband at Ramgadhi village in Meghraj taluka on the night of June 19, a police official said, adding that she was subsequently admitted to the civil hospital in Ahmedabad.

"The victim died at the civil hospital. We will now add murder charges on the three accused who are already behind bars on the charges of attempt to murder" said Meghraj police sub-inspector Sanjay Sharma.

As per the FIR lodged on June 20 by the victim's husband Kuber Parmar, his nephews Babu Parmar and Kodar Parmar got into an argument with his wife, accusing her of practicing witchcraft to harm them.

Babu and Kodar had abused the woman by branding her as a witch. When she and her husband confronted the duo, they poured kerosene on her and set her on fire, the FIR stated.

Since Babu's wife Jyotsna was allegedly present at the spot at the time of the incident, she was also made an accused in the case, the official said.

Local police had arrested all the three accused on June 20.

Condemning the incident on June 21, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had announced that his government would bear the expenses toward the medical treatment of the woman.
