Change in leadership of the Gujarat unit of Congress was imminent, senior party leader and Leader of the Opposition in Gujarat Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela said today.

Vaghela told reporters here that the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee might get a new president in a month.

The current chief of Gujarat Congress Arjun Modhwadia had resigned after the party's defeat in the 2012 Assembly polls, but his resignation was not accepted.

"Our current president has asked the high command several times to relieve him from the post. Now, as our senior leaders are free after elections in Maharashtra and Haryana, it is expected that as in many other states, the party will think about new leadership here within a month," Vaghela said.

Confirming the developments, GPCC spokesperson Manish Doshi said the process had been initiated at the high command's level.

"Modhwadia has been asking the party high command to relieve him from this post. He and the former GPCC president Shaktisinh Gohil are in Delhi now," he said.
