An elderly person's kin, who died merely six days after he had paid an annual premium of Rs 12 under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna (PMSBY), received a Rs 2 lakh cheque today, probably becoming the first family in the state to benefit from the scheme.

"My father had paid the maiden premium of Rs 12 under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna on May 31 at the Central Bank of India's Gangadhara branch in Surat. Unfortunately six days after that, he died in a road accident," Naresh Dankhara, son of the deceased Ranchod Dankhara, told reporters here today after receiving the cheque from the officials of Central Bank of India.

Dankhara expressed gratitude towards the government and said that his family never expected to get benefits of a PMSBY scheme so easily.

According to him, his father died in a road accident after his car was hit by a truck on the outskirts of the city.

In May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched three social security schemes, including an insurance scheme with a cover for Rs 12 per year under the PMSBY.

PMSBY offers a renewable one year accidental death-cum-disability cover of Rs 2 lakh for partial/permanent disability to all savings bank account holders in the age group of 18-70 years for a premium of Rs 12 per annum per subscriber. The scheme is managed by general insurance firms.
