The Gujarat government plans to construct a new jail at Desar village in Savli taluka on the outskirts of the city, it was officially announced here today.
Talking to PTI here today, Gujarat finance minister and official spokesperson Saurabh Patel said, "A proposal to construct a new central jail at Desar was included in the Gujarat budget for 2015-16 which has already been adopted by the Gujarat state assembly".
He said that the present central jail located on Rajmahal road will be shifted to Desar after construction of a new jail there.
The present Vadodara Central Jail was opened in 1882.
He said that the government would consider a suggestion to develop the 133-years-old central jail in the city as a tourist spot.
