Officials say a gun went off inside a young student's backpack in a US school cafeteria, but no one was hurt.

The student was a kindergartner, so about 5 years old.

A news release from the Shelby County school district today says school staffers immediately took control of the backpack.

The school system says there was no evidence of harmful intent.

School security officers and the Memphis Police Department responded quickly, and the child was taken into custody.
