An attack on a police checkpost in the Egyptian capital left one gunman dead and three policemen injured.

The attackers targeted a police checkpoint in one of the main streets in Mohandseen district late yesterday here.

They were riding a motorcycle but lest it and opened fire on the checkpoint injuring three policemen. A gunman was killed during the exchange of fire between the security personnel and the militants, a security source said.

An accomplice of the slain militant was nabbed while trying to flee.

Security and armed forces rushed to the place of the incident and cordoned off the area.

Militant attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Over 500 security personnel have been reported killed since then.
