The protesters wanted to hold a dharna at Kahnuwan chowk in the city and later wanted to take out a protest march to the Deputy Commissioner's office to submit a memorandum but they were not allowed by the prohibitory orders banning assembly of five or more persons.

Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Trikha and SSP Ravcharan Singh in their respective statements said the ban orders were clamped in the city to maintain law and order.

They claimed that no untoward incident had taken place during the protest and the law and order situation in the city was normal.

All vehicles or buses passing through the city were also not allowed to go unchecked today.

The protesters today led by Jaspal's Singh's father Gurcharanjit Singh and Damdami Taksal chief Jathedar Lakhwinder Singh wanted to march to Kahnuwan Chowk from Sidhwan Chor village, but were stopped by the police midway and they were forced to stage a dharna on Harochhani Road.

The protesters were also demanding arrest of the Shiv Sena activists named in an FIR for allegedly causing violence during protest for clemency of death sentence for Rajoana.

The protesters said even though the government had launched two probe panels - one led by Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner and another by DIG border Range - the police seemed to be allegedly shielding the police officers involved in the firing which led to killing of Jaspal Singh and demanded a CBI probe into the case.

Jaspal Singh was killed in an alleged police firing during the protest march in the city in March. The protesters on that day were seeking clemency of death sentence for Rajoana.
