Gurgaon police's claims about reduction of air pollution during Car-Free Day were based on "information provided by the corporate houses" which are associated with the initiative, an official said today.

Gurgaon district administration do not have any portable monitoring device to calculate air pollution and it is dependent on Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) for the task.

But HSPCB only has one device installed at Vikas Sadan in civil line area which has limited reach of 2 to 3 km and chosen car free stretches are situated beyond its radius.

The police's calculation of air pollution is based on the "information" provided corporate houses, Hawa Singh, PRO of Gurgoan police, said.

"The HSPCB has only one device and hence we have asked the corporate houses associated with this initiative to update the police about the number of vehicles used on the car free day.

Our calculation on air pollution is based on the assumption of less number of cars used on the day," Singh said.

The car free initiative in Gurgaon has limited areas with its onus around Huda city centre, sector 18, cyber city and sector 51.
