Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) President Bimal Gurung today said he had written to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde demanding exemplary punishment of the accused in the alleged molestation of a minor schoolgirl in Darjeeling.

"We have written to the Home Minister regarding the brutal molestation of a minor by an RAF personnel in Ghum and have appealed for an exemplary punishment of the culprit," Gurung posted on his Facebook wall.

In the post on the social networking site, Gurung also condemned the police lathicharge on students protesting against the alleged molestation of the minor and said they would demand a high-level inquiry into the "barbaric act" of the police.

"We will demand a high-level inquiry into the police lathicharge on innocent people and students. It's an act of cowardice and immaturity on the part of the police. It was barbaric in nature... Even schoolchildren were not spared," Gurung posted.

He, however, appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquillity in the hills.

Police, meanwhile, said that 25 people were arrested today in connection with yesterday's incident in which locals and students fought with the police.
