Kerala Governor P Sathasivam today urged the corporate sector to take steps to provide quality public infrastructure in the areas of sanitation and waste management as the intervention of government and local bodies alone cannot produce desired results.

He made the appeal at meetings convened at the Raj Bhavan to take forward Swachh Bharat Mission activities in Kerala with the support of private and public entities and religious leaders.

Pointing out the state's achievements in covering household toilets for 97 per cent of families and becoming the first among the major Indian states, he said even though Kerala could start many innovative initiatives under solid and liquid waste management sector, the achievements were yet to impact the grass-root levels, a press release said.

The Governor appealed to the business entities to come up with specific support for full coverage of toilets in the state at geographically challenged areas like Attappady, Kuttanada, Coastal belt and Scheduled Tribe and Schedule Caste hamlets, which demand higher investments.

He has also appraised the forum regarding the construction of public toilets as well as creating common waste management infrastructures like material recovery facility in all Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats.
