The Guwahati Building Construction (Regulation) Bylaws, 2012, would aim to ensure that buildings in the city adhere to environmental norms to promote a planned growth, he said here during a meeting with officials of the state government and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority.

"Such norms are required to make Guwahati a better and planned city," the Chief Minister said.

He also asked concerned officials to promote a "green policy" with regard to construction of new residential and commercial complexes.

"We have to make the concept of 'Green Building' more popular in Guwahati," Gogoi said.

He, however, cautioned officials to keep a strict eye on high-rises in the city in view of the fact that the city, which is also the largest metropolis in North East, lies in an earthquake prone zone.

Gogoi said the new rules would also look at promoting the use of solar energy and rainwater harvesting in buildings in the city.
