Gynecologist suspended in connection with triplet's death

A gynaecologist, working in a government hospital, has been suspended in connection with the death of triplets born to a tribal woman here.

Dr T K Sushama, medical officer on duty in the gynaecologist department of district hospital in Mananthawady here, was placed under suspension for dereliction of duty, a health department release said here.

The action was taken by Health Director S Jayasankar based on a preliminary report by the District Medicial Officer, it said.

According to the complaint by her relatives, the doctor had not attended to Anita, a 27 year-old woman from Edathana colony here, who came to the hospital with labour pains on Wednesday.
 

Instead of attending to her, the doctor referred her toKozhikode Medical College in an ambulance and she gave birth to triplets on the way, including one within the vehicle.

All the three infants died within hours.

When the incident triggered a controversy, Health Minister V S Sivakumar ordered immediate action into the incident.

Vigilance Additional Director, Health Department, Dr R LSaritha has been entrusted with the probe into the issue.
