H7N9 infection cases in China rise to 134

Bird flu cases involving the H7N9 virus in China reached 134 by the end of August, with a new case reported in southern Guangdong Province, the health watchdog said today.

A death was reported last month, taking the total to 45, while 86 patients had recovered, said a monthly bulletin from the National Health and Family Planning Commission.

The newly reported case is a 51-year-old female at Huizhou City in Guangdong. She had been a poultry slaughtering worker at a marketplace for many years, the local health department said.

A 61-year-old man with H7N9 died of multiple organ failure on August 12, local authorities said.
 

According to the bulletin, infections have been recorded in 12 provinces and municipalities.
