"Our responsibility would be to safely hand over the waste to a German agency and once they accept it, it would be the responsibility of the German government to incinerate it safely," MP Minister for Gas Relief and Rehabilitation, Babulal Gaur told PTI.

"We are not worried about the recent protests in Berlin against disposal of the hazardous waste," he said.

Gaur said Germany was disposing toxic waste from all over the world, so resistance to India's waste did not make much sense.

He said that a technical agreement would be signed between the Madhya Pradesh government and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation for the disposal of the waste.

The responsibilities that the agency would be asked to carry out would be stated in detail in this agreement, the Minister added.

Earlier this month, the Government had approved the disposal of nearly 350 metric tonnes of Union Carbide toxic waste in Bhopal by a German company.

According to the proposal, the Centre will pay Rs 25 crore towards the cost of airlifting the waste, to be carried out by German agency-GIZ IS. The waste is proposed to be removed within a year.

About 346 MT toxic waste is lying within the premises of the erstwhile M/s Union Carbide India Ltd plant here.

The Bhopal gas tragedy had taken place at the plant on the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, killing thousands of people.
