Veterans of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War today said all war criminals should be hanged like Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollah who was executed recently.

"We are happy at Mollah's execution and we want that all war criminals should be hanged swiftly," retired Lt Col Noorun Nabi Khan told reporters here.

He is among the 30-member team of Mukti Jodhas and six senior Bangladeshi army officers who attended the Vijay Diwas celebrations commemorating the liberation of Bangladesh on December 16, 1971.

The Mukti Jodhas were, however, upset at the current violence and riots that have followed Mollah's execution.

"This is disturbing. Why can't we control these clashes? There are some elements which are trying to disturb peace by using this occasion. We have to stop them," another war veteran said.

Mollah, a key ally of Pakistani forces in 1971, who was convicted by a war crimes tribunal for genocide and mass rape during the 1971 war, was executed in Dhaka last week leading to widespread clashes in the neighbouring country.

Vijay Diwas is celebrated by the Indian Army each year to celebrate the victory in the war and pay tribute to those who lost their lives.

At 'Vijay Smarak' in Fort William, Indian Army's Eastern Command headquarters, a memorial service for martyrs was held during the day which was open to the public.
