A 23-year-old girl has called off her wedding after the groom arrived in an inebriated condition for the marriage ceremony in Hapur area, police said today.

Upset with groom's behaviour, girl's parents and relatives held him along with "Baratis" hostage for hours and they were released only when local police intervened into the matter.

According to police, a Delhi-based youth, identified as Manish Kumar, was to tie the knot with a Hapur-based girl on Wednesday. Police said Kumar came drunk for marriage ceremony which angered the girl.

"After watching him in an inebriate condition during the ceremony, girl refused to marry him," a police officer said.

Girl's parents alleged that Manish also demanded an expensive bike and Rs 1 lakh in dowry.

"Instead of offering apology for coming drunk on his marriage, he allegedly demanded an expensive bike and Rs one lakh in dowry which angered girl's parents. Girl's parents and relatives held Manish and "Baratis" for around an hour and then called up police," officer added.

Police said that the matter was resolved when both groups offered a negotiation.

"Manish's family returned Rs 2.5 lakh and other valuables received from girl's parents at the time of engagement," the officer added.

As girl's parents didn't file complaint against groom's family, police didn't register case in this regard, he said.
