The Haryana government today said it has decided to raise a women police battalion for which recruitment of 1,000 personnel will start soon.

The percentage of women personnel in the state police has increased from 6 to 9.3 per cent, and with the recruitment of 1,000 more personnel, this would increase to 11 per cent, an official release quoted Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar as saying.

Khattar made the announcement at the second Haryana Mahila Police Diwas programme here.

To train the personnel a centre will also be established in Hisar. There are three police training centres -- at Sunaria, Madhuban and Bhondsi -- in the state at present, the release said.

Reiterating his government's commitment towards empowerment and safety of women, Khattar said two years ago, on Raksha Bandhan, the Haryana government had decided to establish women police stations in all the districts of the state.

"These police stations have been established and approval has been given to establish such police stations in eight sub-divisions," the chief minister said.

Nearly 38 women help-desks are being operated at the sub-divisional level and these could be converted into full- fledged stations, if required, he said.

The government has also decided to provide an additional women police station at Gurugram and Faridabad, Khattar said.

Creches will also be provided at women police stations for children of police personnel and for those in custody. A counsellor will also be appointed at these stations, he said.

He said the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' programme was yielding positive results, with the sex ratio at birth in the state crossing the 950 females per 1,000 males mark.
