A "hardcore criminal" was on Thursday arrested and slapped with the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, police said.

Vipan Kumar Gupta alias Jony was nabbed by a special police team during a raid, a police officer said.

He was involved in a number of criminal activities and drug peddling. At least eight criminal cases are registered against him at Police Station Bari Brahmana.

Jony's motive was not only to create terror among the peaceful and law abiding citizens of the town but also form a gang of criminals, the officer said.

To put an end to his criminal activities, district police Samba compiled all the police records of Jony, prepared his dossier and got issued his warrant under the PSA from the deputy commissioner, Samba, he said. Jony was a threat to the life and liberty of the people of Samba, the officer added.

The PSA is an administrative detention law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.

He was lodged in District Sub-Jail Hiranagar, the officer said.
