A hardcore Maoist, carrying a reward of Rs one lakh on his head, was arrested in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Kondagaon district today, police said.

The cadre Raiju Potai (28) was apprehended by a team of local police from Haatchapai village forests under Dhanora police station limits, Kondagaon Additional Superintendent of Police Surjit Atri told PTI.

Acting on specific inputs, a squad of district force was sent to Haatchapai forests, located around 300 kms away from the state capital Raipur.

On reaching the spot, they found a suspect trying to escape into the core forests, following which they chased and nabbed him, the ASP said.

Active in the outlawed CPI (Maoist) movement since the past ten years, Raiju was a dreaded member of LOS (local operation squad) of ultras. Besides that he was also heading Telanga Jantana Sarkar group in the region, Atri said.

He was involved in various incidents of crime, including murder of a police personnel in Dhanora in 2012, setting ablaze vehicles engaged in road construction works, attack on security forces and damaging government property, the ASP said.

The arrested naxal is being interrogated, he said.
