Police today prevented hardliners from taking a protest march from Sherpur to Hassanpur village seeking release of former militants lodged in different jails.

The hardliners had to march from Sherpur to Hassanpur village where 85-year-old Surat Singh Khalsa is on a fast since January this year for release of former Sikh militants from jails.

In a swift move, police took hardliner of Damdami Taksal Nolan Singh into preventive custody from Amritsar.

Earlier, police took into preventive custody Manvinder Singh, Harvinder Sigh Babbar and Parvinder, all Sikh hardliners from Ludhiana.

Police pre-empted the move of hardliners to stage a protest rally and demonstration between the two villages which are some 20 km from each other, Ludhiana Deputy Police Commissioner Navin Singla said.

The situation is under control and no untoward incident has happened, he added.
