Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today requested the aviation ministry to resume direct flight services between Amritsar and Birmingham to benefit pilgrims and NRIs visiting Punjab.
She wrote to MoS for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha saying she had been receiving requests from Punjabis as well as NRIs regarding difficulties faced by them due to non-availability of direct flights connecting Birmingham and Amritsar.
Harsimrat, in a statement here, said she had informed the Union minister that a number of expatriates from Punjab were residing in and around Birmingham, and frequently travelled to Amritsar to pay obeisance at Sri Harmandar Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple.
The direct flight from Amritsar to Birmingham was discontinued. It is now routed via Delhi.
