Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today directed the officers of Irrigation Department to prepare schemes for construction of check-dams in Shivalik foothills for tapping of rain water.
He also directed them to take steps for desilting of canal beds and strengthening of canal banks for ensuring smooth supply of water at tail end and also for managing the available water for irrigation purposes.
The Chief Minister gave these directions while reviewing a report of the study group of MLAs on Canal Irrigation System presented by Convener of the group Dr Abhey Singh Yadav in a meeting held here late evening.
The group was constituted to study the present irrigation system in the state.
The Chief Minister appreciated the efforts of the Group and directed the officers to prepare a detailed project report covering all suggestion within one month.
Describing water and electricity two major components, Khattar said that we jointly need to lay inclusive focus on water and power management in the state.
The government is quite serious for equitable distribution of available water as well as to provide more water to the people by way of its effective management.
The Chief Minister also asked the Convener of the group to look into the cases of SYL and HBL canal, in consultation with Irrigation Department, which were pending in the court for last so many years.
The presidential reference on the issue of SYL canal was pending in the Supreme Court for last about 11 years.
He asked them to plead this case so as to ensure its early hearing.
On a suggestion, the Chief Minister also directed the officers to carry out a survey for diversion of Dadupur-Nalvi water into SYL so that excess water could be utilised for irrigation purposes in the state.
The officers must carry out a physical site examination with the group members.
He also directed to find out the feasibility for construction of a 20 kilometre parallel canal from Dadupur head to Hamida so that irrigation water could reach the tail end in southern part of the state.
The CM also directed for advance planning of desilting of canals and drains to allow free flow of water by carrying out ground survey of canal system.
During presentation, the Group Convener Dr Yadav
highlighted various suggestions for smooth supply of water for irrigation purposes in the state.
He suggested for construction of parallel channel from Dadupur Head to Hamida and new canal from Khubudo head to Sahlawas.
For desilting work, he said that a silt profile of canal system based on ground survey should be prepared for smooth supply of water.
He also suggested formation of an autonomous board for regulation, amendment in the canal act, sufficient provision of manpower and machinery, effectively management.
He also gave presentation on Bhakhra and Yamuna canal systems; Gurgaon and Agra canals; Lift Irrigation system and JLN feeder, Narwana branch.
