The Haryana government has suspended a driver of the state roadways for negligence in duty after he was found smoking hookah while driving.

Stating that the video clip being aired by a section of electronic media "is quite old", an official spokesperson said today that the driver was suspended promptly after the incident took place.

"The state transport department immediately suspended the driver soon after the incident," the spokesperson said.

A video purportedly showing the driver smoking hookah in a moving bus went viral following which the Delhi government had lodged complaints with the Transport Commissioners of the national capital and Haryana.

Taking note of the video, Additional Director (Health department) of Delhi, Dr S K Arora, had yesterday lodged complaints with transport commissioners of the national capital and Haryana, saying the driver had violated the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003.

Dr Arora said that by smoking hookah while driving, the driver had put the lives of passengers at risk.
