The Haryana government has decided to accord the university status to the Motilal Nehru School of Sports, in Rai district here, Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said today.
The chief minister made the announcement while laying the foundation stone of Deen Bandhu Chhotu RamKushti academy at Kharkhoda in Sonipat district.
Khattar, during the event, granted Rs 21 lakh to academy as he praised the government for taking various steps for the development of sports and welfare of players in the region.
He asserted that the state has emerged as a national and international hub of sports, and called it a "leader" in the field.
"As many as 309 Vyayamshalas have been started in villages which would be further expanded," he said, adding that 525 sports nurseries have also been set up for the students between the age group of 9 and 14 years in government schools.

Also, in order to develop conventional sports of Kushti (wrestling) and Kabaddi, state level competitions carrying prize money of Rs 1 crore in each discipline have been started, he mentioned.
He also lauded the effort put in by state's sportspersons in the recently held Common Wealth Games, and said that as many as 22 medals -- out of the total tally of 66 -- were won by athletes from Haryana.
State's Finance Minister Capt Abhimanyu was also present in the event.
