Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki today appealed to people to give their cooperation to strengthen brotherhood and maintain peace and communal harmony in the state.

Addressing a gathering after unfurling the national flag to mark 68th Independence Day at a state function here, he called upon people to help in further progress of the state and asked them to launch campaign against social evils such as dowry and female foeticide.

Paying tributes to martyrs who laid down their lives during the independence struggle, Solanki hailed Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose for their roles in the country's freedom struggle.

He said besides Gandhi's non violence agitation, Bose's 'Azad Hind Fauj' too played an important role in the country's independence movement.

Martyrs such as Bhagat Singh, Sukh Dev, Raj Guru and Chander Shekhar Azad also sacrificed themselves for the country, he said.

Praising sportspersons who won medals in the recent Commonwealth Games, he said the people of Haryana had achieved progress in every field and brought laurels to the state throughout the country.

Appreciating various schemes implemented in the state for the welfare of weaker sections of the society, he said large number of over-bridges, roads, canals, power houses and universities had come up in the state.

On this occasion, he honoured 47 freedom fighters and their kin. As many as 20 persons were also honoured for their contribution in various fields.
