Haryana State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation (Hafed) has procured more than 1.67 lakh quintals of mustard seed under the price support scheme to save farmers from distress selling.

The Haryana government started buying mustard seed from farmers as market prices last month fell below the minimum support price of Rs 3,700 per quintal of the crop.

The procurement of mustard seed at the MSP, that include a bonus of Rs 100, is currently underway at 13 purchase centres in nine districts of Gurugram, Rewari, Narnaul, Jhajjar, Rohtak, Charkhi Dadri, Bhiwani, Hisar and Sirsa.

The procurement will continue till May 10, 2017, Hafed chairman Harvinder Kalyan said today.

Hafed is procuring mustard directly from farmers through the shops of its member cooperative marketing societies.

The payments are being made electronically through RTGS to bank accounts of farmers.

Kalyan said that Haryana has till date procured 67.46 lakh tonnes of wheat during Rabi-2017.

Of this, Hafed has so far purchased the largest share of 35 per cent by procuring 23.90 lakh tonnes of wheat across the state.
