HAU develops new variety of bajra

Haryana Agricultural University has developed a new hybrid variety of bajra (pearl millet) for cultivation in states of Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Giving this information, K S Khokhar, Vice-Chancellor of the university said the new bajra hybrid is high yielding and resistant against major diseases.

The hybrid variety, in view of its characteristic features, had been identified for release in parts of Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat states which received less than 400 mm rainfall, he said.

Besides, it was resistant against downy mildew and tolerant to blast disease. At the national level, this hybrid had also out yielded the existing recommended hybrids by 10.8 per cent.
