The Haryana government today told the Delhi High Court it has begun releasing water into the cement-lined Munak canal instead of the kutcha canal that was being used in the past.

The submission came pursuant to the court's November 27 direction to Haryana to release water into the Munak carrier-lined canal (CLC) which could result in around 80-90 million gallons of water being saved daily.

A bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul, however, listed the matter for hearing tomorrow as the court had take up another matter.

On the last date, the court had also directed Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to connect the canal with the Dwarka Raw Water Pump House which could then treat and supply the water to sub-city that is currently dependent on underground water to meet its requirements.

Senior advocate Rakesh Khanna, appearing as amicus curiae in the matter, had said the extra 80-90 million gallons per day (MGD), which would be saved by sending water through the pucca Munak canal, can make the water treatment plants at Dwarka, Bawana and Okhla operational.

Earlier, DJB had said that Munak canal has been completed but not commissioned yet and the water supplied by Haryana to Delhi was through a kutcha canal which results in seepage and translates to 50 per cent of water loss.

"80 mgd of water would be saved if water is channeled properly. There is a dispute between Delhi and Haryana with respect to sharing of water," it had said.

The high court had also expressed concern over the dispute and said that "it was tragic that Haryana and Delhi were locked in a battle while 80 million gallons per day were being lost and citizens deprived of drinking water".

The bench was hearing a PIL seeking commissioning of the 102-km Munak canal which was constructed by Haryana with financial assistance of around Rs 400 crore from Delhi government on the condition that the national capital will be supplied 80 MGD water from it.
