The Madras High Court today admitted a woman's petition seeking suspension of an IPS officer for allegedly demanding dowry and going back on his promise to marry her after being selected for the police force.

Justice D Hariparanthaman, who issued the notice to state DGP Assistant Commissioner of Police and Anti-Dowry Cell directed RV Varun Kumar, presently ASP of Thirupattur in Vellore to appear before him in his chambers on Friday.

Petitioner G Priyadarshini submitted that Varun Kumar promised to marry her before becoming an IPS officer and later demanded huge dowry to do so.

She also alleged that Kumar has threatened her that as an IPS officer he would "liquidate her and her family members" by using his influence.

After a long legal struggle Priyadarshini finally managed to lodge an FIR against Kumar in which she said if such a person was allowed to continue in office, victims like her would hesitate to approach the police seeking justice.

Priyadarshini also claimed of writing to all senior police officials as well as the Home Secretary but did not get any response.

She prayed the court to suspend Kumar till the disposal of the criminal case filed against him.
