Hearing a PIL filed by Bombay Bar Association urging for a direction to the authorities to ensure disciplined vehicular traffic on city roads, a bench comprising Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Nitin Jamdar directed the panel to file report within three months, while posting the matter for next hearing on August 2.
The committee includes Additional Chief Secretary (Home) as the Chairman, Principal Secretary (Urban Development Department), Principal Secretary (Transport), Transport Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, MMRDA, Additional Municipal Commissioner Roads), BMC, Greater Mumbai, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), an office bearer of Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) apart from two prominent citizens.
Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vivek Phansalkar has informed the high court that his department will expedite filling up as many as 676 vacant posts of constables and head constables within two months.
He further said that the technology in place for traffic signals and close circuit TV cameras will be upgraded.
Brihanmumbai Electricity and State Transport (BEST) General Manager has also indicated that several measures are being taken by the undertaking to maintain smooth flow of traffic.
